Resurfacing fixes the finish. Remodeling changes the pool. Here's how to tell which one your Pinellas County pool actually needs.

Short answer: The difference between pool remodeling vs resurfacing is scope. Resurfacing renews the interior finish — new plaster, quartz or pebble over the existing shell — to fix roughness, staining and surface cracks. Remodeling goes further: changing the layout, adding a spa, sun shelf or water features, replacing tile and coping, updating the deck, or modernizing equipment. If your pool works but looks and feels worn, resurface. If it no longer fits how you live, remodel.
Curtis Pools has been building and renovating pools in Largo since 1956. Here's how we help owners decide.
How do remodeling and resurfacing compare?
| Resurfacing | Remodeling | |
|---|---|---|
| What changes | Interior finish | Finish plus layout, features, tile, deck or equipment |
| Fixes | Rough surface, stains, surface cracks | Outdated design, missing features, inefficient equipment |
| Timeline | Typically several weeks | Longer, depending on scope |
| Relative cost | Lower | Higher |
When is resurfacing enough?
If the shell is sound and you like the pool's shape and features, resurfacing gives you a smooth, clean, sealed surface again. Signs include a rough feel, stains that won't brush out and fine surface cracks. Read does your pool need resurfacing? and compare finishes in plaster, pebble or quartz pool finish?
When should you remodel instead?
- You want to add a spa, sun shelf, bench or water feature.
- The tile, coping and deck look dated or are failing.
- Your pump, filter or heater is old and inefficient.
- You want LED lighting or automation.
- The pool's layout doesn't match how your family uses it now.
Should I resurface and remodel at the same time?
If you're planning both, yes. The pool has to be drained for resurfacing anyway, so it's the ideal time to replace tile, add features or rework steps. Doing it in one project avoids paying to drain and refinish twice.
Can remodeling be financed?
Yes. Our partner Lyon Financial offers pool loans that cover remodeling, decking, equipment, lighting and more. See pool financing.
