How Often Should a Pool Be Serviced?

Weekly or every other week? In Florida, the answer depends on your trees, your swimmers and the season. Here's how to pick the right pool service schedule.

Last updated: November 2026

Short answer: Most Florida pools should be serviced weekly or bi-weekly, depending on how much the pool is used and what's around it. Weekly pool service is the safer choice for pools with heavy use, overhanging trees, no screen enclosure, or during the hot, rainy summer months. Bi-weekly can work for screened pools with light use in the cooler months. Regular service includes cleaning, water testing, chemical balancing and basic equipment checks — the things that keep small problems from turning into green water or a failed pump.

Curtis Pools has kept Pinellas County pools clean since 1956 with an in-house team — no subcontractors. Here's how we help homeowners choose a schedule.

Why do Florida pools need more frequent service?

Heat, strong sun and frequent rain all work against your water. Sunlight burns off chlorine, warm water helps algae grow faster, and summer storms wash in debris and dilute chemicals. Pools in Largo, Clearwater and Seminole are open year-round, so there's no off-season break like up north.

When is weekly pool service the right choice?

  • The pool gets used most days, especially by kids or guests.
  • There are trees, palms or landscaping dropping debris into the water.
  • The pool isn't screened.
  • It's summer — hot, humid and stormy.
  • You've had algae or cloudy water problems before.

When does bi-weekly service work?

Bi-weekly can be enough for a screened pool with light use, especially from late fall through winter when water temperatures drop and algae growth slows. Between visits, you'll want to empty skimmer baskets and keep an eye on water level.

What does a pool service visit include?

  • Cleaning: skimming debris, brushing walls, vacuuming floors.
  • Water analysis: pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness and stabilizer.
  • Chemical balancing based on those readings.
  • Equipment checks: pump, filter, heater and valves.

Does regular service protect my equipment and surface?

Yes. Balanced water is easier on your pump, heater and interior finish. Chemistry that swings high or low can etch plaster, stain surfaces and shorten equipment life. Steady service is one of the best ways to delay costly repairs — and resurfacing. (If you're already seeing rough spots or stains, read does your pool need resurfacing?)
