The storm's passed and your pool looks like a pond. Before you flip the pump back on, here's the safe, step-by-step way to bring it back.

Short answer: After a storm, take care of your pool in this order: make sure the area is safe (no downed power lines, no standing water around electrical equipment), remove large debris by hand or with a net, check the pump, filter, heater and wiring for water or impact damage before turning anything on, then run the system and rebalance the water with a shock treatment. Don't drain the pool — Florida's high water table can push an empty pool shell up. If equipment got wet or the water turned green and cloudy, call a pool professional.
Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, and Pinellas County pools also take a beating from strong summer storms. Curtis Pools has served Largo-area pool owners since 1956. Here's our checklist.
Is it safe to go near the pool after a storm?
Check first. Look for downed lines, damaged screen enclosures, loose panels and standing water near the equipment pad or electrical panel. If anything looks wrong, stay out and call a licensed electrician. For general storm safety, see Ready.gov's hurricane guide.
Should I drain my pool after a hurricane?
No. Lowering the water a little if it's overflowing is fine, but never drain a pool completely. Saturated ground and a high water table can push an empty shell out of the ground. Fix the water, don't remove it.
How do I clean storm debris out of a pool?
Remove branches, leaves and trash with a leaf net before running the pump. Large debris can clog skimmers, pump baskets and lines. Empty the skimmer and pump baskets once the big stuff is out.
When can I turn the pool pump back on?
Only after the equipment is dry and shows no damage. If the pump, heater, automation or wiring sat in floodwater, have it inspected before you restart. Running wet or damaged equipment can make a repair much bigger. Our pool services team handles pump, filter, heater and valve repairs.
How do I get the water clean again?
- Run the filter continuously once the system is safe.
- Test the water — rain dilutes chemicals and throws off pH and alkalinity.
- Shock the pool to kill bacteria and algae.
- Brush walls and floor, then vacuum.
- Clean or backwash the filter as it loads up.
What if my screen enclosure is damaged?
Keep everyone out of the pool area until torn screens and bent framing are secured. Curtis Pools offers screen enclosure installation and repair as part of our pool upgrades and features service.
