Two pools in the same Largo neighborhood can land at very different numbers. Here's what actually moves the price of a new pool in Pinellas County — and where the money is worth spending.
Last updated: October 2026
Short answer: The cost of a new pool in Pinellas County comes down to five things: size and shape, construction method (gunite or fiberglass), site conditions like access and soil, the features you add (spa, heater, lighting, automation), and the decking and safety items that finish the job. A simple rectangle with a standard finish sits at the lower end; a custom freeform pool with a raised spa, water features and a large paver deck sits at the higher end. The fastest way to a real number is an on-site design consultation and an itemized quote.
Curtis Pools has been building pools in Largo since 1956 — more than 5,600 of them. Here's how we explain pricing to homeowners before they ever sign anything.
Does pool size and shape change the price?
Yes — it's the biggest single driver. A larger pool means more excavation, more steel and shell material, more interior finish, more water to heat and more chemicals over the life of the pool. Freeform and geometric designs with curves, benches and sun shelves add labor compared to a simple rectangle. If you mostly want to cool off and float, a smaller pool with a sun shelf often gives you more daily enjoyment per dollar than a big, deep pool you rarely use end to end.
Is gunite or fiberglass more expensive?
It depends on the design. Gunite is fully custom — any size, any shape, any depth — and that flexibility usually comes with a longer build and a higher price for complex designs. Fiberglass shells install faster and have a smooth, algae-resistant surface, but you choose from set shapes and sizes. We break down the trade-offs in detail on our pool construction and design page.
How do site conditions affect pool cost?
Every lot is different. Things we look at during a property evaluation:
- Access: Can equipment get into the backyard, or does the crew need to work around fences, trees and tight side yards?
- Grading and drainage: Pinellas County gets heavy summer rain. A pool has to sit right so water drains away from the house and the deck.
- Soil and water table: Sandy soil and a high water table are common near the coast and can change how we excavate.
- Waterfront lots: Seawalls, setbacks and salt air all add planning on homes in Clearwater, St. Petersburg and the beaches.
Which pool features add the most to the price?
Features are where projects grow. The common add-ons we install include a spa or spa spillway, a pool heater, LED color lighting, smart automation, waterfalls and deck jets, a salt chlorinator, and a screen enclosure. You don't have to add everything at once — some homeowners plumb for a future heater or spa now and finish it later. See the full list on our luxury pool features and upgrades page.
What else should be in a pool quote?
A complete quote should cover permits, the deck, fencing or barriers, and safety equipment. Florida's Residential Swimming Pool Safety Act (Chapter 515) requires every new home pool to have at least one approved safety feature — a barrier, safety cover, door alarms, self-closing doors or a pool alarm — to pass final inspection. Curtis Pools includes a Pool Patrol safety alarm with new builds, plus a free start-up package with one month of service so your water is dialed in from day one.
Can you finance a new pool?
Yes. We work with Lyon Financial, a lender that specializes in pool loans for construction, remodeling and upgrades. Options can include fixed rates, extended terms, unsecured loans for qualified applicants and no prepayment penalties. Details are on our pool financing page.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I get an accurate price for a new pool?
Book a free design consultation. We walk the property, talk through how you'll use the pool, and give you an itemized quote — so you can see exactly what each feature adds.
Does a spa add a lot to the cost?
A spa adds shell work, plumbing and usually a heater, so it's one of the larger add-ons. Building it with the pool costs less than adding one later.
Do you build pools outside Largo?
Yes. We build across Pinellas and Hillsborough counties, including Clearwater, St. Petersburg and Seminole. Start with our Largo pool builder page to see how we work.
